The user profile service service failed the login.

User profile cannot be loaded. Windows Vista-

This one sucks a bit when you first see it. I think it is caused by standby problems. Turn hibernate and standby off, I bet it never comes back.

Here are 3 ways how to fix your corrupt user profile:

1. go to c:\users\yourname. look for your documents. are they there?

  • copy your documents to a safe place
  • copy your internet favorites to a safe place
  • consider just copying to the new profile windows created for you and calling it a day, OR:

2. Use system restore (you must be an admin user to do this)

Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore… restore to a known good date

3. Edit the Registry – The sortof hard way- (run as an administrator account, skip to 4 if you don’t have one)

The goal here is to take the .bak file and make it active again:

  • start>run> regedit
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  • look for 2 sids (long numbers) that are the same. one ends in .bak the other doesn’t….
  • “S-1-5-21-7623811015-3361044348-030300820-1013”              –example           (this is the temp one you are in now)
  • “S-1-5-21-7623811015-3361044348-030300820-1013”.bak        –example .bak    (this is the good real one)
  • rename the .bak to say “sid”.try1
  • rename “sid”.bak to “sid” with no extension (here you are restoring your good sid from the windows backup”
  • i’m not sure what to do if the .extension is .BAD. comment if you do please.

NEW – How to fix your machine with a corrupt profile if you DO NOT have an admin account that is functioning-

If you do not have an admin account that functions, you need to reset your admin password –

Go to this web page for instructions on how to create a cd that will reset your admin account. Don’t worry windows always comes with an admin account hidden for this purpose.

DON”T BE EVIL WITH THIS TOOL!!! You can go to jail for screwing with this tool in ways you should not be. Make sure you are aware of all 5th amendment violations you can cause by using this on somebody else’s machine.

May update – we think this happens when you close a laptop and it goes into suspend/hibernate and later runs out of battery. Not sure. MS is mum. Another MS fail from their tech support. The guy in India was nice, but come on, he was remoted in to my machine for almost 6 hours. He couldnt work it out and wouldn’t listen to me. i just wanted the cause.. not a fix as I seem to have that.

So far I haven’t seen this message myself. Can you click ok or anything to get past? It should build a new temporary profile.

Thanks mate.. youre a lifesaver. I used method 3. It was tricky getting in because I only have 1 user. Plus hadn’t made a restore point. Got into the registry and made the name change and all is good…. Thanks

I need personal help.
The problem with mine is that the account that [won’t log on is the administrator account]. And so right now I’m on the Guest account trying to figure out how to fix it.
Another big problem is that when I try to to simple things in the control panel that require the administrator password, whenever I type in the password nothings happens. It will notify me when I put in wrong password, and when I put in the right one, it just sits there… This is hard because without it, I cannot turn off the UAC and I cannot at least make a new account to transfer the files I need out of the messed up account. So the first part of your idea the “go to c:\users\yourname ” won’t work for me.
Please help.

Lori – you are correct, you don’t have permissions as the guest account to build a new account or edit an existing admin account. This just happened to my brothers machine a few weeks ago and I helped him fix it over the phone to europe. You need to build a cd to fix it, then boot off the cd, change the administrator account password then reboot. I’m trying to think of the easiest boot cd/password reset tool for explaining this. Usually I use Hiren, but there are more simple tools out there.

Hi Nerd and others
It would appear from your comments above, that you could help me.
When rebooting my laptop in Vista after a MS update, the desktop settings were corrupt. After another reboot, I could no longer log in – getting the … user profile service failed .. message after entering my password. I am the only user/administrator.
My only access to the system is now via command prompt on the repair facility on the Vista installation disk. Having followed your instructions (and many others on the web on the same theme) to try and fix this issue, I cannot find any SID’s above S-1-5-20 (only 18, 19 and 20). Is there any way to recreate SID 21, or is there any other way to restore a user profile or restore access?
Your help would be much appreciated.

Hi Nerd,

I am currently having the same issue but I dont have a guest account set up on the laptop. Do you have any idea how Frances got into the Safemode screen without being able to log in? I just stuck on the main logon screen with that error showing. Please help.

You can also copy all your documents and pictures to a USB. Do so by starting your computer into safe mode. Attach a USB and then go into “Computer” then “C drive” then “Users” then user name or default and then right click on the “Documents” or “Pictures” and then “Send To” and click the USB name.

All of a sudden, my user account disappeared on my PC running vista. I have 3 other user accounts. I don’t care if I have to create a new user account but I need to be able to restore all of my email files through the old account. Any suggestions? the easier the better for me… I’m ok with a computer but not extremely tech saavy.

I have an HP and just recently I lost the ability to login. I was able to get to safe mode and enable the hidden built in admin account but when I create a new user account no profile is created and still get the user profile can not be loaded error. Where or how do I manually create a profile for an account if win7 does not do it automatically. I also tried copying files from a good user account that has never been in use that I can now log into but that does not seem to work either.
